*** Spoilers. ***
All the crews are dancing to different mixes of David Guetta’s “Without You ft. Usher,” “Turn Me On ft. Nicki Minaj,” & “Memories ft. Kid Cudi.” They must use gloving, ‘dolling,’ and gliding to reflect the styles and personalities of Kid Cudi, Nicki Minaj, and Usher’s featured tracks. Overall, every crew’s individual routines were on point and the mixes weren’t as shitastic as they’ve been in the past few weeks. Lil Mama’s back to her usual nonsense. Which means upsetting things were afoot.
I don’t front objectivity. I’m really really really irritated by ABDC and what the current state of the show means about the entertainment industry and the general public’s inability to appreciate what dance is supposed to be. I hate that people think this show is an accurate representation of the dance community, etc. Rather than rant aimlessly, I’ve chosen an alternative style of writing this week that I hope you’ll enjoy. If not, *Kanyeshrug*
Mos Wanted Crew – “Without You ft. Usher” “Turn Me On ft. Nicki Minaj” & “Memories ft. Kid Cudi”
Summary: Mos Wanted opens by emoting a softer side of themselves, feeling out the tone of “Without You.” The routine starts off with minimal movement, slowly building with the beat. Love the cannon to the crescendo of the cymbals at 0:10. Dope multi-level gliding going on at 0:20. As soon as Nicki Minaj comes in on “Turn Me On” the guys switch back to their signature hits and sharpness, especially the section from 0:33 – 0:38. Bam shows off his pirouettes and lets some of his early dance training show at 0:47. Lando’s INSANE footwork drops at 0:54. MWC switches it up again, going with groovier choreo for “Memories.” The guys put their hands on Bam (which looks dope with the lighting), he gets shoved out and spells out M-O-S with their hands at 0:00. I.aM.mE was sitting in the crowd looking pretty impressed.
Thoughts: The judges touched on this, but I still want to elaborate on what made that performance great for me. I’ve said it every week, musicality. These guys bring it every week, kill every beat, hear every sound in the entire song. However, what made this performance special is that Mos Wanted got to the heart of the challenge this week. Yeah, the challenge was pretty whack on the surface, but the point of doing gloving, gliding, and dolling was to explore the different tone of each song and demonstrate it through the different styles. As the songs changed, so did the nature of Mos Wanted’s movement. “Without You” was soft and emotional, “Turn Me On” was hard and energetic, and “Memories” was groovy and fun. No one has Mos Wanted’s musicality.
P.S. I love the orange and black ;)
8 Flavahz – “Memories ft. Kid Cudi,” “Without You ft. Usher” “Turn Me On ft. Nicki Minaj”
Summary: Girls start with their hands forming an eight which bursts when the beat drops. I really liked the “Memories” section from 0:04-0:09. Ok the lyrical opening to “Without You” was dope, even though I don’t really like stunts. Did not like the girls just standing and waiting for the beat at 0:35. The pretty close to flawless section of this routine that really makes it for me though is the “Turn Me On” section. The girls definitely killed the dolling more than anyone else. Watch all of the dolling section from 0:48-1:20.
Thoughts: This is the 8F I wanted all along. I could still do without all the flips though… I like watching the dancing, although they did do their challenge pretty literally in terms of style and song pairing. No crossing over, unlike MWC. Overall, though:
Elektrolytes – “Turn Me On ft. Nicki Minaj,” “Memories ft. Kid Cudi” & “Without You ft. Nicki Minaj”
Summary: Nice little leg movement on the click click at 0:11. Waiting, waiting, waiting at 0:23. Elektro catches the record scratch at 0:31 with the gloving. Longest cannon ever with eight people from 0:35 – 0:39. Pacman thing at 0:50 was DOPEEEEEEEEE. Quite a quick section from 1:00-1:04 with TK going in at center. THIRD WEEK IN A ROW WHERE CAMERA CREW SLOWS DOWN ELEKTRO’S FLIP FORRRRR THEM (1:08). WTF. Ending flip awkwardly misses last beat by… a lot… like there was literally no beat when he landed. NONE.
Thoughts: Cleanest Elektro to date.
Mos Wanted Crew – “Somebody That I Used to Know” by Gotye
Elektrolytes – “Feel So Close” by Calvin Harris
Summary: Mos starts off with a pretty literal interpretation of “You didn’t have to stoop so low,” followed by series of really small & fast hits to the beats. Ian starts off the Mos Wanted solos at 0:16 with some bone breaking. Puspos is up next with his jump at 0:25 and controlled landing on the insanely fast little beats. Then Lando goes onto his hands at 0:28, walking to the beat. JP’s up at 0:31 with some krumping to the bigger beats. Bam gets lifted up at 0:37 and mocks the Elektro pose. Elektro’s up next with decent framing stunt after stunt after stunt – I think I’d like them more if this was how they performed in their routines throughout the season. Redux of the capoeira kick-everyone-while-they-stand-in-a-circle-except-this-time-I’m-punching-them at 0:58. Really questionable locking technique at 1:04. Mos Wanted is back with Jawn’s isos & absurd intensity at 1:16. Not sure what the transition from the mocking the Elektro pose from 1:22 – 1:24 was, but I liked Jun showing that he can do stunts too with the butterfly twist at 1:25. Mos Wanted throws their hats at Elektro, who look really scurred/offended by it. Elektro’s up again and I do really like the little cannon of movement at 1:54. Ben has a solo at 2:01, but misses a lot of the beats (especially noticeable after Mos Wanted just demonstrated they can hit all of them). Lol at Mos randomly waving and sticking their arms in random directions at 2:06. Nunchucks (2:11)? Really? Puspos takes off his shoes and pretends to use them as nunchucks at 2:15. Note 2:24 where MWC is hitting all the beats with their entire bodies whereas Elektro is just using decidedly unimpressive arm waves & head isos. Next comes a series where the camera crew shifts from focusing on MWC to Elektro right as Mos is about to land their big stunt at the end of each section.
Thoughts: ( ಠ_ಠ) What is this fuckery?
